House Remodeling Update 2.12.06

Most of my work for the last 3 weeks has been concentrated in the kitchen/dining room area. We decided to get rid or the 45 degree stove counter area. We moved the stove to the center of the kitchen facing the dining room. There is a 4 foot wall behind the stove. We will place a narrow counter/shelf on top of that wall and attach a breakfast bar to the opposite side (of the stove) which will run to the back wall and L toward the french doors. A window will be added to the back wall which will be the same size as the window over the sink.
We made an L shape food prep counter in the corner where the stove used to be. The short counter in the dining room section is extended the entire length of the wall between the 2 doors. Cabinets have been added above and below.
The door from the mud room is removed and the doorway is relocated toward the back approximately 36 inches. This made room for the fridge to be placed back in the kitchen and create the triangle so many people refer to in proper kitchen design.
New walls are going up in the mud room to separate the mud room from the kitchen. The mud room will also serve as an extra bathroom with toilet and stand up shower stall. The old kitchen sink will be moved into that room to serve the wash duties as well as hand washing. The old kitchen door will be used to keep that room closed off from the kitchen. There is a short hall created by the new walls which will buffer traffic from the mud room and kitchen.
Upstairs work is slow right now. The bathroom is fully insulated and all electrical devices are installed (lights, GFI outlets, fan and heater). The floor has cement board installed and the tub is ready to be set. I try to work up there during the week a few hours in the evening.
The electrical work in the house is slowly progressing as well. Most changes are made during re-arrangement of rooms. I have a plan for making all circuits function from planned breakers. There are still some old wiring issues I am working around. Lighting in the kitchen and dining room is still being discussed.

This project is overwelming at stressful at times. Over all I am pleased with the progress we have made. I have enjoyed being able to make changes as we feel necessary.
